Improving steel sheet production through expert vibration engineering

Why vibration matters in steel sheet production

The production of steel sheet involves several stages - casting, hot and cold rolling, levelling and finishing. Throughout these stages, vibration can strongly affect product quality, process stability and machine condition.

Even low level vibration can create visible surface imperfections, repetitive patterns, or thickness variations. These issues often intensify as the strip moves through successive machines.

Because steel is used in structural, automotive and industrial applications, maintaining consistent mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy is essential.

Uncontrolled vibration also increases mechanical loads on rolls, bearings and drive systems, leading to higher wear, downtime and maintenance costs.

Hot rolling mill

Common quality defects in steel sheet

Chatter and thickness variation

Vibration at certain speeds can lead to repeating patterns or inconsistencies in thickness and flatness.

Roll marks / repeated defects

Small variations in roll movement or surface condition can transfer patterns directly onto the strip.

Marks from trapped material

Particles caught between rolls and the steel strip can leave recurring impressions if vibration is not addressed.

Uneven lubrication patterns

Vibration can disturb lubricant distribution, affecting friction and strip stability.

How Vibremo supports steel producers

We carry out vibration investigations across the steel production process, including roll grinders, hot and cold rolling mills, levellers, and finishing equipment.

We measure vibration under real operating conditions and analyse the interaction between rotating components, machine structures, roll surfaces, and process parameters.

After identifying root cause issues, we provide practical recommendations: improving roll condition, checking drive alignment, inspecting rotating components, reinforcing structures, enhancing damping, or adjusting operational parameters.

Follow-up measurements confirm improvements and create baseline vibration fingerprints to monitor equipment health and maintain consistent production over time.

What you gain by working with Vibremo

Consistent product quality

Reduced chatter mark occurrence and strip imperfections.

Lower scrap and rework

Products meet specifications on the first pass.

Enhanced machine reliability

Less wear on rolls, bearings, and structures.

Improved productivity

Practical solutions for optimal performance.
